All good things come to an end
Project Mala 21'-22' · 27. January 2022
After two wonderful weeks of relaxing during the Christmas holiday, it is time to continue with the project again. The end is approaching rapidly and there still are some crucial steps to be taken to conclude the project successfully. We choose to travel back inland on Friday, because the students were very enthusiastic about the (Saturday) market in Brikama Ba. We accept the fact that we have to sacrifice our last vacation weekend for this, because the project is always our top priority.

Time flies at the smiling coast of Africa

Here is another update from the Smiling Coast of Africa. At the moment we are enjoying our Christmas holidays here, which with an average temperature of 32 degrees Celcius is a slightly different experience than we are used to. But before the Christmas holidays have started, we have taken a few steps forward in the project. We have divided the project into two different parts. And also did a lot of more fun things in the Gambia.

The real work

After the short introductory period of just under two weeks, we traveled back to the inland of the Gambia again to start our project this time. It is our first time on the Gambian public transport and we are a bit overwhelmed by the number of cab drivers who approach us and try to get us to join them. When we make our way through the crowd, we think about Barbara's offer to send someone along to help us...

A deep dive into the Gambian culture

Finally the time has come, we are at Schiphol Airport and the adventure is about to begin. A bit tense and curious we get into the plane. There is no way back now. The heat hits us immediately when we get out of the plane. After a chaotic start to get the stamp in our passports, Barbara is waiting for us outside. During the ride to our accommodation the culture shock kicks in. It is extremely hot and what are all these staring Gambians doing along the side of the road.

Two months have passed, one month still to go. This blog post is written on the shore of the River Gambia, in Kuntaur. Bird sounds resonate from all directions. We often see the most wonderfully coloured birds fly over the river, above the passing fishermen on their small wooden boats. Yesterday, we even saw a whole herd of cows crossing the river!
