The objective of this year’s project Mala is to reinforce the entrepreneurship ambitions in the inland of the Gambia, near Janjanbureh, through giving workshops, starting a business and drafting an incubator program.
This will contribute to the higher goal of project Mala which is facilitating the creation of new startups in The Gambia to improve the entrepreneurial environment in the country.
Our goal is to help young entrepreneurs in the Gambia to start their own business. We will travel to the Gambia from the beginning of November, until the end of January. We will work hard to reach our goal in these three months. Sustainability is the greatest objective of the project. We aim to make our efforts last and be carried on over the years by the local populations.
This year, we will expand the previous years’ research into the job market to the inland of the Gambia. Research from past years show that lectures in Gambian schools are very theoretical. This makes it more difficult for the students to independently make the step between school (theoretical) and starting a company (practical). When a student graduates, there are few job opportunities. This causes many to ‘flee’ to other countries in West Africa. For this reason, this year we also want to set up a small company with a group of students. We want to transfer enough knowledge to the students for them to keep the company working for the coming years. Our hope is to give the students the fundamental practical insights they need to start their own company.
